Attitude is everything: A parent's perspective
Parents know when their child is struggling, and they recognize the need for a turning point. One specific example of how sessions run often involves a parent joining in. For some kids, that first session can be intimidating, and incorporating mom or dad can bridge the gap. Other examples include using a 10-minute demo reel to curb anxiety for a new coach. This is the beauty of working with video footage to help kids find a deeper level of wanting to learn and being open to new ideas.
From impossible to incredible: A journey of determination
The inspiration for our totally inclusive off-ice training session came from a 12-year-old who came to me with zero skating ability and absolutely no intuitive instincts for the ice. The situation was made worse by the fact that he was overweight, and the simple skillset of getting up on his feet was near impossible. All he wanted was to join his buddies on a team.
Despite being told the realistic timeline it would take to catch up, his passion for wanting to fuse his identity with the sport of hockey was unquestionable. After three months of determined on-ice effort, he was defeated by what wasn't going to just happen overnight. It was from this encounter and experience that Coach Nick went to work, creating a new way for every kid to fuse their identity with the sport and find their own unique place within it.
